Firstly, the lubrication effect: cutting fluid can form a lubricating film on the front and back of the tool to reduce direct contact with the metal surface, reduce friction and adhesion phenomena.


In order to ensure good lubrication, it is required that the cutting fluid can quickly penetrate into the contact interface between the tool and the workpiece or cutting, and form a solid adsorption lubrication film, which will not be damaged under high temperature, high pressure, and severe friction conditions. When the cutting fluid contains oily additives (such as fatty acids, soaps, amines, and other compounds) or extreme pressure additives (such as sulfurized oil, chlorinated paraffin, zinc dialkyl disulfate, and other organic compounds containing sulfur, chlorine, or phosphorus), its lubrication effect is greatly enhanced.


Generally, cutting fluids containing oily additives are only suitable for low-speed and light load situations; Sulfur-containing cutting fluids can withstand high temperatures of around 1000 degrees; Chlorine containing cutting fluid can withstand temperatures of around 600 degrees and has a better ability to reduce friction coefficient than sulfur-containing cutting fluid.


Cooling effect: The cutting fluid can quickly remove cutting heat from the cutting zone, causing a decrease in cutting temperature. The greater the fluidity, thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity and heat of vaporization of cutting fluid, the better the cooling energy. Since the thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity and heat of vaporization of water are higher than those of oil, the cooling effect of water-based cutting fluid is better than that of oil-based cutting fluid. When foam exists in the cutting fluid, the cooling effect will be reduced, So sometimes it is necessary to add a small amount of anti foaming additives (such as dimethyl silicone oil, oleic acid, etc.) to the cutting fluid to improve the cooling effect.


Cleaning and chip removal function: Cutting fluid can timely remove cutting, metal dust, and sand particles that fall off or break off from the grinding wheel from the workpiece, tool (or grinding wheel), to avoid cutting blockage and scratching of the processed surface. This function is particularly important for processes such as grinding and deep hole machining, which requires the cutting fluid to have good fluidity and sufficient flow rate and pressure during use.
